LONGSHAW SHEEPDOG TRIAL FELL RACE

http://www.longshawsheepdog.co.uk/fell_race

We are suggesting that instead of your own club, you enter as ‘Viking VSU’ for the very last time!

The Fell Race course covers 5 miles of varied terrain over Burbage, Higger Tor, Over Owler Tor, Owler Tor, Lawrence Field & Longshaw Pastures, including woods, rocky paths and the occasional bog.The start field can be seen from the majority of the route and conversely the spectators can follow the runners through binoculars.

LONGSHAW AREA WALK

Ian Macklin has kindly agreed to lead a walk in the area. Further details to follow when he gives them to us. :-) Will he be wearing the fabled moustache? Make sure you dress inappropriately and that you have a frame rucksack. No jeans.

ROCK CLIMBING AT STANAGE EDGE

Meet 10am Stanage Plantation car park. Bring whatever gear you have either for bouldering or routes, or just come and watch Andrew Crome climb something really hard!

If it is wet, bring socks to pull over your climbing boots.

CANOEING

For those who have ever been involved in unit canoeing. Chris Champion proposed a paddling session at Holme Pierrepont Nottingham on the morning of the reunion.

“Meet there at 10:30am to allow plenty of time for boating, swimming and hauling equipment out of the Trent. If you can remember which way around you sit in a canoe then you're good enough! I'm sure between us we can organise equipment for those who don't have any. Temperatures are guaranteed to be equatorial. Everyone welcome. I believe it's currently £8 for a 3 hour pass.”

CAVING

Malcolm Halsey will be leading a caving trip down Peak Cavern. This will be beyond the showcave and will be ‘proper caving’. People will need to provide their own fleeces, old waterproofs and wellies, helmet and headtorch. There is a short fixed (rigid) ladder at one point but otherwise it is all fairly straightforward and very impressive compared to the usual squalid Derbyshire mud fest.

Malcolm says -“It will be suitable for anyone who keeps themselves reasonably active and isn't going to have a heart attack on me. You would get wet up to about waist level.”

It will mean a fairly early start (8am from Allestree or staying up in the paek) to get back in time.

So far we have Malcolm, John and Frank Warwick and Mark Silo – there are only TEN PLACES available on first come first served basis - if you want to reserve a spot email

mhalsey1956@hotmail.com

ASAP

IF YOU WANT TO ARRANGE ANY OTHER ACTIVITIES ON THE DAY THEN LET US KNOW AT thevikingreunion@gmail.com and we will advertise it for you.

Pay your Debts - Well buy a ticket by June the 15th please

That phrase has an oddly familiar ring about it. I have just been putting a bit of timeline for the reunion together and everything we want to do relies on having an accurate idea on how many people are coming. Here is the problem. 66 people have bought a ticket, but nearly double that have said they are coming. We are only a few weeks from away from needing to place orders for food, and goody bag contents and at the moment I think we would under order, so here is our plea.

If you know your going to be going please buy a ticket by the 15th of June so we can have a firm idea of exactly who is going. Then we can buy the right number of everything.

If you don't buy by this date we may need to put the price up as sourcing things last minute gets more expensive. Oh and if you know someone who says there going put hasn't bought a ticket have a word please. Mild verbal abuse and twisting arms at this stage is fine, standing on their neck can wait until early June.

Here is the link to the ticketing site one more time, what could be easier?

If we told you we would have to kill you.

Ian Shaw has sent me the minutes of the first organising committee meeting through. There is loads of stuff happening and everyone in the committee has stuff to do. Thanks to all of them for getting so involved, whilst I sit behind a computer doing the easy bit.

Now I could tell you everything that we have planned, but to be honest its going to spoil things a bit for you. So I'm not going to publish the full minutes on here. However if you hate surprises, always read the last page of the book first, stopped believing in Santa aged 4 and you want a copy. Email thevikingreunion@gmail.com and I will send them through to you.

Get your memorabilia sorted though I can tell you that, we plan to have the "time wall" idea set up in a couple of rooms and you can attach your Unit stuff to the wall, the more people who bring stuff the better.

Oh and the final part of the evening could be a bit special. If that is we can overcome a couple of health and safety hurdles. Most of you who were in the unit before 2000 won't be familiar with health and safety, but it is a way of stopping people having fun in case they then refuse to take responsibility for their actions when they get hurt. I know ridiculous isn't it but what can you do?

I can also  tell you we have 1829 quids as a balance in the account. So far we have paid out a deposit for the venue and we have paid $100 for the ticketing website. There are paypal fees to come out yet too.

What started as an idea during a few drunken conversations is looking like it could be quite an occasion. So thanks for all the help support and interest, roll on September.

Over 50

Actually none of then are as yet, but we have now sold 56 tickets. The furthest anyone is coming so far is from Botswanna (Frank Warwick). Guy Hilliard has been traced to Antartica so he has the furthest to come, we await developments with interest.

Last night the organising committee had its first meeting at the rugby club, with me tuning in through a very patchy skype connection. It was so patchy I tuned out after a bit and let them get on with it. There are minutes being written up as we speak, I will let you know what occurred as soon as.

And here are a few pics from ancient history if you don't have facebook

Latest news

So things are going along nicely, you have bought 34 tickets and the word seems to be getting out. Don't wait to long before you buy a ticket, they might be in short supply before too long.

Here is a breakdown of who is responsible for which parts of the reunion at the moment. We need to get on with spending your money so we are assigning people to jobs, actually they are pretty much assigning themselves, which is rather marvellous. I think we have a good outline plan in place and a good team to deliver it, now for some detail.

About the Event

The What

We Start by making a presentation to Peter, then, we get back together, talk about then and now. We eat, drink and say a collective thank you to Peter. Then we formally close the unit.

News just in, we now have an organising committee including currently, but not limited for too long I'm sure to:
Dave Prince, Ben Bellamy, John Warwick, Toby Clarke, Ian Shaw, Sean Ince, Andy Bond.

The Where

Hopefully many of you will start your Saturday doing the activities you used to do, or are still involved in. We will organise some of this, but hopefully some of you will organise and publicise your own sessions.
During the afternoon we will all meet up in Allestree for a presentation at 4.30. There will then be time for a quick change if you want before its off to Derby Rugby Club in Darley Abbey from 7pm onwards.

Itinerary

Morning - Activities
4.30pm  Presentation to Peter in Allestree
7.00pm -11.30pm Derby Rugby Club

This Includes

A barbeque or buffet depending on the weather.

We should be able to provide drinks both soft and alcoholic but how long the bar will be "free" for, will depend on the numbers attending.

A slide show (of course).

A time wall - bring your viking memorabilia and pin it up to see what we got done over those 40 years and in what order.

A formal closing ceremony, top secret at the moment, but let's burn out not fade away.

A goody bag including some unique and classic momentos to remember your evening and what little reaminans of your rapidly fading youth.

Where does my money go?
Firstly no-one who is organising is getting paid or taking a cut that wouldn't be right.

You will be getting the following:

The presentaton we make to Peter will be custom made.

Venue hire - we got a good price.

Food - looks like quality stuff, menu to follow when we confirm.

Drink  - again the more the merrier you will be.

Ticketing costs, depends how you pay but roughly 3 pounds per ticket.

The closing ceremony - the more people come the better this element becomes.

Goody bags - the more people who come the better these will be.

If as we hope there is a surplus, any monies left over will go to local charities and we will let you know who gets what and have some say in the process.

And Finally

We are limiting this to 200 hundred tickets at the moment. If the demand is there we will try and accomodate as many as we can, but no promises. There probably won't be another one of these, so book early to avoid dissapointment.
